A Guide To COD4 Jumping/Movement Techniques

In the game, winning or losing is sometimes just a function of who can get to a critical location faster. You got skills, you aim well, that's good. But wait? Can you move like a pro as well?

Practicing perfect movements in COD4 is not something easy, not learnable in one day, it requires lots of practice, skill and experience. Basically, but it's also an art, an enjoyable feature, it's another way of playing Call of Duty. All Thanks to the Quake Engine. Take a look of this useful guide and enjoy practicing you what you've learnt, ie. Move, Jump like a PRO!

Getting Started

In order to start mastering movement in COD4, on a stock map (e.g. mp_crash) you need to get a stable 125 FPS. For best possible movement on public servers, it would be even better if you could get a stable 250 FPS. If you plan on being a professional COD Jumper, you need to get a stable 333 FPS (it's restricted in promod servers as with 333 FPS, you'd mostly see people almost flying around due to the increased jump height).

If you're getting on any FPS lower than these numbers, then your computer certainly needs upgrading. You should consider upgrading your Processor, Graphics Card and RAM. If you're getting around 250 FPS or anything above 125 FPS, you should be fine, you will still be able to do a lot of jumps and also there is a way to boost up FPS. Read up our guide here to configure your game properly for the optimal performance | Best Configuration Practices For COD4

By now your CoD4 and your Windows should be fully configured, to give you the best performance possible, you have everything ready, what's ahead? Knowledge about the perfect movement!

Frames Per Second

Different FPS allow you to jump at different distance and different height levels. There are mainly only 3 different FPS used in CoD4 Jumping, 125, 250 and 333. That's how they work :

125 FPS - 40.5 height units
250 FPS - 41.5 height units
333 FPS - 46 height units

125 FPS is mainly used for parallel distance jumps. 250 FPS is mainly used for far distance jumps, not straight jumps, usually for bounces and FPS switches, for jumps from high to far low platforms. 250 FPS is not used for parallel distance jumping as it gives bad results. 333 FPS will give you the best distance outcome, but it also makes your movement more fluent and when jumping on far distances. However, when it comes to far distance jumps e.g. from high to low platform 333 is not used, as it simply won't reach what 125 or 250 will, it will make you go high for a certain time then fall down.

It all might sound simply in theory, but it's a lot more complicated when it comes to practise, that is why we've provided here some video tutorials on several CoD Jumping/Movement techniques. Check them out and start practicing the techniques!

Jumping Techniques

Via : CoDJumper

a) Strafe Jump

Strafe Jump is the most popular technique used in CoD Jumping, it allows you to jump a lot further than you would jump by just running straight and far. Strafe jumping allows you to jump further by executing a slight mouse movement while in the air. The idea is to commence your jump by pressing and holding the W and A keys to steer your avatar (left and forward). Then, the sprint button. Finally, when you are in the air, you rotate the mouse into the jump.

b) RPG Jumps

RPG Jumping is basically the same as regular jumping, the difference is you use RPG and you go much, much further! Be aware though, on public servers you can only do RPG jumps if the rocket will hit ground that is much below you, if you just fire the RPG at the ground you're standing on, you will simply die. This technique takes practice.

c) Bounces

Bounce does exactly what the name suggests, it makes you, BOUNCE! You basically jump on a object, if the object is slanted that means it's bounceable. If you jump using correct FPS and hit it with correct height and speed, it will make you bounce! There are many possible bounce jump locations in almost every map in COD4, you might need to explore youtube and other sites for some video tutorials and some upcoming from E|G community also!

d) FPS Switches

FPS Switching is the technique that allows you to hit bounces and then land on certain places with a proper manner. Many jumps require different kinds of FPSs, many bounces require different kinds FPS switches. You could like change your FPS using console everytime on a different jump, but you couldn't do that on Switch Bounces. What will make your life much easier and speed up your jumping are binds (basically a set of command/commands which get executed when you press a specific button in game e.g. pressing right mouse button makes you aim down sight in COD). Following is a pretty useful bind for switching FPS in COD4 which you can either add in your config or manually enter in console.

/bind MOUSE2 "toggle com_maxfps 125 250 333"
(Changes FPS between 250 333 and 125 333)

e) Elevators

Elevators is a technique that will make you "fly-up" on certain objects, to the very top of that certain object. It's called elevator, because you basically go straight up next to an object, just like a normal elevators do. It's a glitch in COD Quake Engine, and it's pretty interesting to do once you learn how to do it the right way! Following are the common binds used to do Elevator glitches in COD4 easily:

/bind L ";+moveright; wait; wait; -moveright"
/bind K ";+moveleft; wait; wait; -moveleft"
